About Gasa

Gasa means a place of happiness or a place to laugh. Situated in extreme north western part of Bhutan, this entire district falls under the Jigme Dorji Wangchuk National Park. The total area of this starkly beautiful region is 4409 sq. km and elevation in the district ranges between 1,500 to 4,500 meters. Not surprising, then the region experiences long and hard winters and short but beautiful summers. The region is administered from the beautiful Gasa Dzong locally known as Tashi Thomon Dzong, the fortress served as a defending barrack in the 17^th century. The beauty of the Dzong is heightened during clear days with view of Mt. Gangboom.

The natural splendor of Gasa is unparallel in the country. The region has some of the highest peaks in the Kingdom and over a hundred glacial lakes that are at the foot of these greater Himalayan peaks feed some of the major river system in the country. A famed series of hot spring of ‘Tshachhus’ with renowned medicinal properties are another important natural resource in the district.
